Why The Heck Do I Need A Skincare Serum? And when should it be applied are some questions I get a lot. Also, a lot of people have no idea why they need more than one skincare product. Well, beauties fret no more as I am here to tell you all about one of my favorite skincare products, for us over forty, which is a serum!
What The Heck Is A Serum?
A Serum is a skincare product that you apply to your skin after cleansing it and before you moisturize. There are a few things that stand out in a serum. First is its distinctive textures, like a silky watery texture or a smooth lotion, a gel or oil. Think lightweight.
Another distinct characteristic of a good serum is that it will contain a concentration of one or more of the following ingredients, delivering them deep into the skin.
- Antioxidants
- Moisturizing ingredients
- Soothing ingredients
- Skin-replenishing ingredients
- Restoring ingredients
Why Do I Need A Serum And A Moisturizer For My Skin?
A serum is created to complement your moisturizer by boosting its hydrating effects. While some serums do contain moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, they are not considered a moisturizer. A moisturizer is usually thicker, and aside from its hydrating benefits, a moisturizer is used to create a barrier on the skin. Hence, helping to keep all the other skincare goodies in the skin where it needs to be to work.
Lastly, a serum is used to focus more on a skin concern, than just moisturizing it. For example, loss of collagen, uneven skin tone, dull skin, signs of aging, etc. Because of this, you need both!
When Should I Apply A Serum To My Skin?
You can use a serum twice per day: In the morning, apply it before your daytime moisturizer with sunscreen; at night, smooth it on before applying your nighttime moisturizer. However, you want to keep in mind those serums that are sensitive to the sun. Also, I have experienced flaking with some serums when trying to wear under makeup, so make sure to test this first.
What Ingredients Target Which Skincare Issues?
It is necessary to know what ingredients are used for what, so you know which serum is best for you. This can be a bit complicated, but I will list some of my favorites below, that are great for us beauties over forty!
Vitamin C: This is great for increasing our collagen levels. It is also great at protecting our skin against age provoking dangers, like pollution, dirt, exposure to the sun, smoke, makeup, etc. Vitamin C helps to combat this by complementing our skin with natural ingredients that further strengthens its durability and protective agents, enabling us to achieve a better, healthy complexion.
Retinol: Also known as vitamin A is one of the most effective anti-aging ingredients for softening the appearance of wrinkles and improving uneven skin tone.
Hyaluronic acid: When in skincare, this ingredient can provide an instant and lasting moisturizing, whitening, anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, nourishing skin effect! Even for the under the eye.
Glycolic acid: Glycolic acid is the holy grail for exfoliation. Serums that contain this ingredient are fantastic for removing dead skin cells, treating skin discoloration and signs of aging, like fine lines and wrinkles.
Which Skincare Serum Is The Best?
Again a serum that you select should be one that will target a specific skincare problem. But, one of my all-time favorite skincare products is Reviv Serums, Ultimate Serum. , that I mentioned in my Skincare Friday Favorites.
The Reviv Ultimate Serum is not only my favorite because of the results that I get but also because it is a product that addresses every concern of aging skin and is the ultimate rejuvenator; an all in one skincare serum…Oops, eleven!
The Reviv Ultimate Serum is 11 different products in one:
- A brightening product
- An antioxidant serum
- A firming and tightening product
- An anti-inflammatory
- A peptide serum
- A green tea complex product
- A vitamin C serum
- A sebum controller
- A collagen stimulator serum
- A growth factor serum
- A moisturizer and light emollient
Additionally, it contains PhytoCellTec stem cells, growth factors, peptides, tripeptides, hexapeptides, antioxidants, emollients, sebum-controllers, anti-inflammatories, collagen producers, phytosterols, glycolipids, and polyphenols, making it stand up to its name by being the ultimate cruelty-free, physician-recommended skincare product.
TIP: While this is my all tip favorite serum, I only use this at night time as it does not work well under makeup. It tends to flake or ball up and give you the appearance of dry, flaky skin.
So, as you can see beauties, a serum is a must. You have a skincare concern you want to address than a serum can be your best friend!
